Friends:
I've put up with a modem problem for a very long time now. I'm hoping someone on-list can explain the technical reasons behind the problem...
I have a 3M PC Card fax modem, #44517 that uses an Xjack connector. It's supposedly a relabeled Megahertz XJ1144. It works fine with my UMP2K (and my 120 & 130 when I had them). The problem is this:
1. If I try to restart with the modem inserted, the Newton won't restart. I must remove the card & hold in the reset button until it resets.
2. Sometimes, on power up, with the modem inserted, the Newton will display the "wait" icon and power off. After several attempts, the Newton will only power up successfully after the modem is ejected. The problem will go away for a while after a reset, but it always returns eventually.
3. I suspect (but can't prove) that the Newton has failed to wake up for a AlarmClock alarm while the modem is inserted.
Why do these things happen?
Thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Jim.
