If you have rechargeables installed and they are ok, this is fairly
safe. They will limit the voltage the MP sees to about 5 volts. As
long as they are healthy. If you have (empty) alkalines or no
batteries at all in your Newton, it is essential that the voltage the
panel provides doesn't exceed 7.5 volts. Never ever, not even for a
microsecond. This is why I would never connect a MP to an unreglated
solar charger. It's cheaper and safer to get a solar charger that can
charge 4 AA cells externally.
Which has the additional benefit that you can charge one pack while
you carry your Newton around, powered from a second pack.
