I'm not sure whether there's some learning involved with the printed
recognizer (Rosetta), but basically it is recognizing standard printed
letters. In contrast to the cursive recognizer, which is highly dependent
on language specific data on both letter shapes and words, the printed
recognizer will, for example, recognize umlauted or accented characters,
even when the Newton is a US model (which would have trouble recognizing
words containing such characters if the cursive recognizer was selected).
These considerations aside, chosing between the two recognizers is
largely a matter of preference. While I got reasonably good results from
the cursive recognizer of my first Newton, an MP120, the printed
recognizer introduced with Newton OS 2.0 was better suited to my normal
handwriting, which is why I am now using it now exclusively.
The expert on HWR here is Paul Guyot, so you will probably get a more
comprehensive reply from him.
