Hello list,
I recently had a crash with my Newton whereby my system soup was lost. I restored from a card backup and everything seemed to be 0.K. so I made a new backup of everything there and then. Turns out the system soup was still corrupted and I had just replaced my old system soup backup with the corrupted one! Anyway I brain wiped the Newton and restored everything except the system soup and re-entered all my personal preferences, folder structures etc. (a pain!) I had read that a list member noticed when using the help part of applications and selected a topic from the list that the black selection line remains on the next screen. This was a system soup error apparantly, and my Newton showed the same fault. When brain wiped and restored minus the system soup backup as mentioned, the problem was gone, but soon came back! One weekend of brain wipes and selective restores later, the problem still remains! Any ideas?
On a seperate note regarding storage cards and memory fragmentation, when downloading web pages I was being told that the card was full although about 600- 800 k remained (8mb card) .
I moved all packages and information to another card (also 8 mb) , and was told that there was still 1.2 MB in use! Anyhow I wiped the card and restored everything and it is now much quicker accessing info etc.
Incidently my other 8 mb card that did not get as much use still showed >200K in use when it should have been empty too but again is also fine now that it has been erased.
As someone mentioned recently Newt FTP from Tactile won't accept its registration code when its entered under these circumstances (it needs the ORIGINAL system soup from when it was first registered!) How stupid is that! I am going to try to e-mail them and lets hope they respond as I have paid for this software.
The thoughts of the list would be appreciated, thanks and sorry for the long message,
Eric
