White LEDs do indeed exist. There are a number of manufacturers making them.
The original BL works on the principle of EL and I have investigated a
straight swap. My preliminary investigations reveal that, although I could
have these tooled, I would need to order 30000 !!
The LED approach is not only more efficient but the quantity buy is
considerably less.
