It's a separate flexible electroluminescent (EL) sheet under the screen. The
sheet is made of a phosphor luminous layer sandwiched between two electrode
plates (one is transparent). The plates are driven at about 400-800hz at
100-200V. EL sheets are available in a variety of colors The light output
intensity and sheet half life is usually dependent on the color.
