Hello list,
In connection with a not so recently mentioned topic regarding the finite
lifespan of flash memory,
I would appreciate feedback on the following idea;
Firstly, as an electrical contractor I am constantly entering new meetings
in dates (jobs),
and prices in the notes application, and use the unit constantly in other
ways.
The dates, names and notes info are installed on the internal store, and I
backup to a storage card.
Almost everything else is stored on a storage card.
My worry is this;
Although flash memory has a lifespan of approx. 100,000 read/write cycles,
my Newton internal memory (flash ram also!) has been used constantly
for over 4 years, and I intend to use the unit for many more years, as
NOTHING
else out there comes close to fulfilling my needs.
Should I therefore store all new info. on a storage card, and use SBM
utilities for a card to card backup,
as thanks to the recent 4mb card offer on the list I now have some to spare.
The unit itself is a U2000 running at 222mhz, and usually has 400k+ heap to
spare,
so speed/heap issues shouldn't be a problem. I would appreciate feedback
regarding any
downsides or problems that I should know about (including any other ways to
minimise read/writes to the internal store).
BTW a programme called noFX, which enables you to turn off the built in
animation effects such
as the "poof" when erasing text or the paper crumple when deleting notes
etc. will produce a black line across
the built in help menus when selecting a submenu, which was thought by some
to be a sign of a system soup error.
It will also mean that an error message is produced when opening a Waba
app., rendering it unusable.
Not checking the box labelled "turn off view effects"will fix these
problems.
Thanks in advance,
Eric Byrne
