Sorry to disagree but...this latest move is "SO APPLE"
Apple is very short-sighted. They have always done what is best for them
"right-now" never looking at the bigger picture of building their market.
While the PC market kept growing by maintaining its focus, Apple zigzagged
about all the important areas of their business:
Apple intos Newton - Apple make Newton its own company - Apple takes Newton
back -Apple kills Newton
Apple allows Mac Clones - Apple buys the largest Mac Clone maker - Apple
stops all other Mac clones - Apple Kills its own clone
Apple promises the ability to upgrade - Apple changes its chip set
I was Apples biggest fan (I still have about 4-5 of them ... but then again
I still have an Altair) but I can't put up with a company that can't make up
its mind about its direction (it cost too much to keep changing...too much
money and time.) I have switched to PCs and its been smooth sailing.
Don't get me wrong, I like Apple, I just won't buy another one.

Bill,
What's not clear from your comments is lots of Macs are passed on to
another owner, which increased the Mac user base.
Over the last ten years, I've passed on a 575 Performa to a brother,
a 6100 to a friend, a 7200 to a friend; also purchased a used Centris
650 for mom, and a used iMac B for mom-in-law. All of these are still
in use!
I had a 512 Mac that was donated in 1995 (still in working order).
You're right that Apple lost hardware sales - but Apple and others
have benefited from software sales - and when Apple was still making
peripherals the company did receive additional hardware sales.
I didn't buy a Newton (2000) until 1997. The likelyhood is that it
will carry on until I can get a Dick Tracy watch using voice
communication.
