For the record, the Keyspan adapter does a bit better with this dilemma.
Instead of freezing in the boot, it merely changes the modem from internal
to the USB adapter. :-) I don't know about the cost comparison, but I'm
happy with the Keyspan adapter. It has two ports, and can imitate the
printer and modem port. It's another option to consider.
