In principle any GPS will do, as long as it gives you the data on a serial
port in the NMEA format (4800 baud,8,N,1). Nice to have would be RS232
output (a bare GPS receiver board has mostly only TTL output which has to be
transformed into RS232 by a level shifter) and a battery buffered clock.
Also nice to have is 12 channels or may be more as well as a handbook with
commands, especially commands to set the position acquistion time interval.
This is normally 1s but if you plan to use GPSmap it is recommended to use
less frequent updates. About 2 or 5sec is already very good for GPSmap on a
MP2k1. And there's another amazing thing: The memory bug -10061 might cause
GPSmap to crash, if its private bug fix isn't enabled. With bug fix on
GPSmap becomes as slow as it is on a MP130. But on a non-upgraded MP2000 the
61 bug doesn't exist and the bug fix must thus not be enabled and on these
machines GPSmap will run on its full speed.
I don't know much about the Teletype program but remember, that it needed
its own card format and that it is not possible to create your own maps.
You're forced to buy them (for a dead platform from a possibly not
interested dealer).
For GPSmap you can scan your own maps and you could even create vector maps
(small!!!).
