I'm by no mean a specialist on those things, but I would think that if the
Newton reported "Authentication failed", then it's just that. I'm not sure
at what point header compression kicks in, but I would wildly guess that
it's not until the authentication is done. So, if I were you, I would
double-check the userid and password, make sure it's exactly as on your PC,
with respect for lowercase and uppercase.

If I'm wrong, and it's really the header compression thing, then I'm afraid
you're SOL, since NIE doesn't support header compression, AFAICT...
