I have not tried power cycling to get the MP2K to recognize the keyboard
in the SER-001. I'll try that, thanks Dave. However, you mention that
the dongle pulls a pin (hi? low? I forget) upon insertion, thus enabling
the MP2K to recognize the dongle. Surely there's a serial pin that could
do the same? Also, radio modems etc. don't recognize the Newton because
it doesn't set DCD on the serial port. I wonder if there's a trivial
bridge on the solder points on the board which might overcome this irksome
Newton deficiency.
Now to the latest issue: I had noted previously that the board caused the
MP2K to bow out slightly. I had thought this wasn't a big deal, but have
since discovered that it's a *big* deal: I can no longer click the door
into place folded in the back of the Newton. It pops out.
This leads me to think a bit about what I might be able to do to deal with
the bowing. It seems that the bowing isn't caused by the serial port so
much as by the board itself. Inside the back of the Newton is a thin
layer of soft plastic, likely protecting electronic parts from the back of
the Newton. I wonder if this layer can be removed safely to make a
slightly thicker area. I guess the back wall of the MP2K could be lightly
sanded as well.
