How are the archives stored? Are they individual files
existing on some directory on the machine, or are they
in some kind database?

If they are individual files, may I recommend
www.atomz.com
My theory is that why load down the machine with doing
it's own cataloging? Atomz is free.
Otherwise, the next best alternative is some kind of
database configuration (hey, wouldn't it be cool to
have it on some kind of FMP with the Newton client..)
