I don't know if I can shed any light on it or not ( I might dim it a
little), but...

I have a 2100, both a 3Com 3c589 and a 3c589D card.

I have installed NIE 2.0: (package names and versions as they appear on
Newton)
Newton Internet Enabler 2.0
InternetSetup 2.0
NIE Ethernet Module 2.0
NIE LocalTalk Module 2.0
NIE Modem & Serial Module 2.0
Newton Devices 1.0
Farallon Enet
z3ComDrv:clli

With both cards, I can (with the correct card, set in InternetSetup)
connect to anything via ethernet.
