I too experienced slow dates application for a single day about a month ago.
No appearant reason such as packages running in background or anything
like that. It went away the next day, and things are back to normal. I did
nothing to affect the OS, such as deleting programs, preferences etc... I
did perform a reset, which did not seem to bring things back to normal
immediately. The next day everything was back to normal. good luck
