I don't know about the IRIS, but:

Just a day or two ago there was a nice report of compatability with the
QuickLink pen and IR and Newton (no cable needed). The pen also was
reported to talk to laptops, which the Newt cannot.

If you check out the archives (link at www.newtontalk.net) and search for
"Quicklink" it will be easy to find (like Wed of this week? or so).
