Followup:
I took a close look at the specs for the Archos units you pointed out
above. It was one I was considering as a possibility, in fact.
They are MUCH larger and heavier and slower than the iPod.
Archos: 4.5" x 3.2" x 1.3", 12.03oz, USB
iPod: 4.02" x 2.42" x 0.78", 6.5 oz, Fireware (a half-inch shorter in
EVERY direction and about half the weight, and far faster to transfer
data, plus the unit charges when plugged into your Mac too!)
Battery life looks about the same. I can't be sure if the iPod or the
Archos units rechargeable batteries are removable. I'd give negative
marks for non-removable batts, but only a small negative - with a 10 hour
battery life, I can't see ever having to worry about replacing 'em.
Plus, the iPod uses Lithium batts and the Archos NiMH. Advantage iPod
unless the Archos are removable....maybe; the Archos might not be able to
charge Lithium batts properly.
I can't tell about their software, especially their Mac software. But
I'm betting on iPod, personally. It sounds much better, from the limited
info I have about Archos's.
And finally....The iPod is MUCH better looking. The Archos is just plain
U-G-L-Y.
Frankly, I never expected Apple to make an MP3 player, but I'm not
surprised that when they did it'd be one that'd actually be the one I'd
be interestd in buying. Elegant, that's the only word for it. Harware
origami.
