Don't be led too quickly into a ridiculous conspiracy theory like this.

Regardless of how much we fixate on and continue to use our beloved
MessagePads, there's still no guarantee the product would have found it's
place in
the market in the face of very significant competition from Palm. There's
plenty of
room for disagreement on the decision, and people continue to fixate on the
personalities involved with no more than rumor and speculation to draw
on...but
there's no reason to believe that the Newton division wasn't shut down for
anything other than basic good business sense.

It's also important to remember that Apple has always carried a large
amount of
ready cash on their balance sheets, even when the perception (not entirely
accurate) was that the company was one step away from complete and utter
failure. Apple didn't need the investment from Microsoft to survive; and they
certainly didn't need it to develop the iMac. When all is said and done,
it was a
brilliant public relations scheme that give Apple the appearance of
stability for
those who thought the company desperately needed it, and it was an investment
that paid off nicely for Microsoft.
