But in most of the large volume engines the ratio between piston
displacement over its diameter is larger then one, meaning the piston has a
long stroke and thus needs a large diameter crankshaft which reduces the
transmitted force and increases the lifetime. In order to get still enough
force to the wheels its necessary to install more hp but this will finally
not compensate the missing agility of the engine. All racing cars have a
large diameter piston and short stroke and its clear that the smaller
crankshaft will accelerate faster than any larger diameter. The final killer
of agility is the automatic gear shift. While driving in the US I found that
all cars had a built-in delay between pressing the accelerator and movement
of the car. There's always a half second gone before something happens...
