This is just bad design. Nothing stops the designers from detecting a low
battery level and refusing to turn on until the batteries are charged or
replaced or the unit is connected to AC power, all the while having enough
power left to hold the memory for several days.
Other devices do this that cost a fraction of the price of a Palm, so it's a
serious oversight. I would hope that the newer models have corrected this
glaring defect.
But, if there's a h/w problem draining the battery, then all bets are off.
