1. Rumor Mill: Apple to develop new wireless handheld=20
According to industry rumors, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is considering a
move into the wireless handheld market with a new device. The supposed
device, dubbed "iPhone" by those in the know, would offer wireless data =
and
voice access through an Apple Mac operating system. Industry insiders =
point
to recent behind-the-scenes wrangling between Palm and Apple over =
linking
Palm's own devices to Apple's new operating system -- apparently with =
little
cooperation on Apple's part -- as evidence that the company is =
considering a
handheld of its own. Analysts also cite Apple's deal with Pixo, the =
tiny
company that designed the software for Apple's popular iPod MP3 music
player; that deal includes a license for Apple to use Pixo's software =
with a
second product. Apple has declined to comment on the rumors. The =
company was
burned by its first foray into the handheld market with its then
ground-breaking device, the Newton.
