While not very common, few providers (mostly cable) require your MAC
address. AT&T for one, requires your MAC address which is bound to your
account and allows access to their network through whatever device (be
it a NIC or Spoofed router etc...) Most cable providers bind the MAC
address of the modem these days, and i've never heard of a DSL provider
requiring a MAC address. The only reason I can think is that the DSL
network you are going to be on is DHCP and this is one way of providing
secure access.
