my vote would be to skip hardware except for legacy support of existing
units; designing/building new units would easily consume any imaginable
fund.

perhaps it's time to emulate Apple's example and move toward 'nix.

port Newton core (HWR, object libraries, NewtonScript, ...) to Linux --
- use other new hardware already out there, e.g., iPaq, Zaurus, ...
- leverage software development tools & dev community (Java or C++, but also
NS if that's ported) and update to new standards (XML, SOAP, etc.)
- focus on the integration and user experience where the Newton excelled
