I'm afraid Till is right - Siemens data cable do have some extra
circuitry in it. I found a "do-it-yourself" instruction for such a
cable and it includes using some IC, capacitors and so on. And this
circuitry has to take power from somewhere, I figured out that in my
cable it should take power from serial port, not the phone, and I
suspect that Newton can't provide enough power for it (or I messed up
with the pinouts somewhere).
