Here is how it works:
The saying: [People | Employees] are our most valuable
resource ....

Let's break that down to management speak;
People = chattle. Why? Because the C*O folk are what
are known as "rarafied air breathers" This means that
they don't socialize with the "riff-raff" of mere
"employees" They go to "dinner parties" at "the club"
and "Thousand dollar per plate fund raisers". They are
cheaufered and have their own entrance to the
building, if they ever go to the office at all. They
fly on company jets so that they don't have to
associate with those of lesser means. They don't have
to worry about a "job" if this one fails because other
rarafied air breathers are on their board of directors
and they'll get a new job before the ink dries on
their golden parachute.

Valuable = expensive. You see, the Hope Diamond is
"valuable" But it's also expensive! It's expensive to
house, it's expensive to guard, and expensive to
insure...Cheaper to get rid of it! Besides, Employees
are "bodies". All CEOs know that the tech market is
saturated. For every new tech job, there are a
thousand resumes (probably more...) So, management
knows that they can fire (otherwise layoff) a
$55k/year worker and replace them within hours with a
worker who will do the same job for far less money! (I
have a neighbor who's from the middle-east. His work
visa was about to expire. The company who brought him
over to this country knew it and didn't want to renew
it. They laid him off. He got another job within the
week, but making half of what he was making...why?
because if he didn't get another company to renew his
visa, he'ld be out of the country...he was willing to
take lower pay (for a similar job) in order to stay in
the country.) And Managers know this. It's getting
that way for all jobs. In the field I work in, jobs
that were offering $55-75k last year, are now offering
$30-50k, with far more skill requirements (the one I
thought was funny was the one needing someone with a
MINIMUM of 5 years of .Net experience...yeah right...)

This just sucks...
