Before doing all that, why not just get 4 AA cells in series by whatever
means - cheap plastic battery holder from a radio, anything - and use the
free wires from the existing battery connector to wire into the eMate (watch
the polarity! Red is positive) and see how the eMate behaves.

Don't try to charge the battery so have the mains adaptor disconnected for
this test (unless you are using NiMH cells).

This will at least show if the eMate will run from batteries reliably.

If it does then it's probably worth making your own pack.

The thermistor that is connected to the other two wires in the pack is
important and unless it has been damaged physically it's probably OK.

The silver tape is easy to find, any automotive store will have rolls of
self-adhesive aluminium tape for repairing car bodies and a small square of
this will hold the thermistor in place and help it to measure the
temperature of the pack as it charges. (Don't allow the tape to touch the
wires of the thermistor).
