Once upon a time, Michael J. Hußmann dressed so fine,

I grow weary of disparaging references to the age of UNIX. The
operating system which began in 1970 is not the same operating system
today. With time comes advancement and improvement and refinement and
yes, the odd step "backwards". The philosophy of the "UNIX way" may not
have changed but interfaces and algorithms and the like have changed
with the flow of time just as hardware has. If you (the generic
3rd-party "you") wish to take UNIX to task, do so for technical reasons.
We still use UNIX today because it is a well-designed operating system
philosophy which has stood the test of more than one so-called "modern"
operating system billing itself as "the UNIX-killer". To wave a
dismissive hand and sneer "thirty years" so undercuts the rest of your
argument that you might as well not even make it.

I'm pretty sure that I wasted my time typing this; I'm getting the
feeling that most of those to whom I would address the message are of
the opinion that everything sucks except some nebulous Other that will
come like the Messiah to free us of things that suck. They don't know
what that is, really, but they'll know it when they see it. Fine, but
while you wait for your promised OS the rest of us have work to do and
we want to work with the best tools available today, not sit on our
keisters and speculate while the in-box collapses under its own weight.
