I have the same behaviour with my 3C589D card.
But I assume that this is an matter of saving battery power:
the light on the dongle (showing that the connection is powered) switches on
as soon as you try to connect via Ethernet and stays on for the duration of
the connection (at least in my case).
So try to establish a connection after you re-inserted the card once aftyer
powering up the Newt.

But after switching on the Newt I have to eject and re-insert the card in
order to get it initialized.
I already intended to ask the list if there is no software solution to
initialize the card?
Any comments?
