You don't need the PC side to update this card. Get the Mac upgrade.
I got a 4288 not long after 33.6 was becoming the "new" standard. As
was/is often the case, PC versions get discounted while Mac versions do
not. Anyway, I popped the 4288 into my Powerbook 520c and ran the Mac
version of the 33.6 upgrade. The software did the deed, and in the
'book, it was faster. I suspect it wouldn't be notably faster in the
Newt due to limitations in processor power. Eventually, I moved the 4288
to my MP 130, and it now runs in my MP2000. Of note, when plugged into a
"pure hardware" external modem (28.8), my Newt is faster than with the
33.6 PC card modem. Think about it. The data coming in and going out is
in the same form, regardless of the platform. The interpretation of the
data depends on the platform, and goes on within the computer, not the
modem. As far as I can tell, aside from packaging the 4288 and the Mac
version (3288?) are the same. Anyway, I've used mine for 5 or 6 years
now without a hitch. My $0.02.
