Wow, I guess it would all depend on what you are
expecting. Honestly, there is really no "real"
constraint as to what ISP you use as long as it uses a
TCP/IP connection. This means that AOL is out. But,
basically everyone else is in! You then need to
identify how you would use your Newt and ISP. Will you
need to access your dialup account from other states?
Or countries? If so, you need an ISP with an
international presence. AT&T, UUNET or SPRINT would do
the job. Otherwise, you can go with any "local" ISP
that gives you the best price. Here in Northern
Virginia, I've seen dialup ISPs going for under $10
with "all you can eat" internet! Only problem, they
have a narrow pipe and they only have a local
presence...
As for Modem? Again, how will you be using it? Will
you be hooking it up to a cellphone at all? (don't
knock it until you try it!) If so, then you need a
modem that is compatible with both the Newt AND the
cellphone (I hear good things about that SPRINT data
connectivity, if only their coverage wasn't so crappy)
Otherwise, you're not really limited as to your modem
choice. I've played with a bunch including the
Motorola 144 Celect, Motorola Montana, Dell w/x-jack
(basically an OEM rebranding of the USR x-jack) Be
careful with the USR modems, I hear that there are
some that will not work with the Newt. I'm sure that
the information is in the FAQ. I use a Simple
Technologies 33.6 just because I've had great success
with it!
So, There you have it...I hope I have muddied the
waters too much for you.

Just because you're a genius, doesn't make you a smart guy!
