Both good points.
FWIW department, MS Exchange does not require the firstname.lastname
convention.
We've been using MS Exchange for years with a variety of naming
conventions before the @ mark.
It got so bad for a while with all the changes (most were on the other
side of the @ mark), that I used my personal Email address on my business
cards.
Finally we migrated to the firstname.lastname convention. It sure is
nice.
