Unless he has a a recent Mac that has only USB port, he can make a serial
connection but run AppleTalk on it. The main advantage is speed. A serial
connection will not go any higher than 115,000 bps, but an AppleTalk
connection runs at 230,000 bps.
OTOH, if he has a recent Mac that lacks any serial port, then he must be
using some kind of USB-to-serial adapter. In that case, he can't use
AppleTalk because the adapter won't be able to convert the incoming packets
onto the USB interface, since there's never been such a thing as AppleTalk
over USB...
