Warning: geeky typography stuff ahead...

The reason the special characters, such as the bullet and most of the
math symbols, appear bitmapped when printed is because of the character
encoding. The Newton fonts (which are actually bitmaps encapsulated
within a TrueType font shell) are encoded using MacRoman or Apple
encoding. This encoding defines where in the character map each letter or
symbol is found. The PostScript fonts which reside in a PostScript
printer are Adobe encoded, not MacRoman encoded. The character
definitions are different, and many of those characters mentioned above
do not exist in the fonts. Times, for example, pulls characters like the
bullet and the delta from the PostScript font named "Symbol". These are
called a composite typefaces and explains why the standard alphanumeric
characters will print in Times, while certain special characters, like
the bullet, print using the bitmap sent from the Newton.
