I know it's been discussed several times before about AirPort/WaveLan
compatibility on a Newton. I just want to confirm that you can do
wireless networking on the Newton.
I downloaded Hirochi Noguchi's alpha-stage WaveLan driver for the Lucent
Technology WaveLan PCMCIA card off of his web page (provided as a link
on the Newton FAQ) http://www.ff.iij4u.or.jp/~ngc/.
Off of ebay I paid 60 bucks for a Lucent Technologies WaveLan Silver
Turbo 11MB (802.11) compliant PC card.
I spent an hour fudging around with the set-up for the card and have
finally managed to maintain a stable wireless AppleTalk connection
between my Mac and my 2100. I have backed up the Newton, installed some
packages, and exported some NewtonWorks documents without a problem.
I have not been able to get the 2100 to become part of my computer
network using my AirPort base station as router. The connection that I
can get is a computer to computer temporary network. I had to enter in
the G4's IP address, subnet mask, etc. by hand into the Newton.
You can't believe how happy I was when I saw the computer come up in the
Newton chooser when trying to dock.
This was all done using OS 9.2. I haven't been successful so far in
OSX.1. I'll give an update if anyone is interested. I also haven't
been able to figure out how to get internet access either through the
base station or a direct computer to computer network. I'd gladly take
suggestions from anyone.
I know many on this list have known about the alpha driver for some time
(it was posted last summer). But I've never seen any posts on this list
confirming that it worked.
AirPort is possible. No more crossover or serial cables!
