Joel, my eMate's screen will ocasionally get horizontal 'stripes' on
only the right half of the display. Is this a sign of the ribbon cable
going bad? I'd like to receive your fix details as well please.

Michael,

> (1) Lid/hinge problem:

It sounds like one of the springs which act as a clutch to support the
screen has popped out of the hinge. The danger here is that the
protruding
spring leg can puncture the display cable which is then very hard to
fix.

Avoid moving the screen until you can investigate further.

I'll send you details of how to address this problem directly.

> (2) Powering on/sleep/battery problem:

Probably a dead battery.

If you have access to a voltmeter or know someone who has one, you can
check
the voltage across the red and black leads of the battery. When fully
charged, a good battery will read close to 5V, a poor one < 4V.

New battery packs can be made up reasonably easily if you can solder and
I
believe these are still available here and there. Original battery packs
will be getting pretty old themselves by now and they don't much like
sitting discharged for years.

In general I would suggest only connecting and disconnecting the charger
to
the eMate when it is working - I have found that this eliminates
problems of
the eMate not waking up if the charger is disconnected while it's still
asleep.

The switch that controls the wake/sleep function in under the left side
of
the screen as you face it. The Power button on the keyboard does exactly
the
same thing so use that until you check out the hinge issue.

Joel.
