Some company in Maryland called Iridium Satellite LLC bought the whole $5
billion (thousand million for some of our readers) system for some
ridiculous price of $78 million or so. They then turned right around and
got a $72 million contract from the US DoD. There's also some commercial
sales going on too, I think. The old Iridium prices were around $7/minute
and the current prices are more like $1.50/minute or so. Last month, five
Iridium spares were launched.

If aviation had grown as slowly as space travel, the first paying
customer would have flown in 1943 -- in the 1,657th expendable Wright
Flyer.
