This is an entirely different issue. Normal (Alkaline) batteries have
1.5 Volts where as NiMH cells only have 1.2 Volts each, which means that
your Newton is getting 4.8V where it should be getting 6V. The Newton
re-chargeable pack has extra connectors - I'm not sure if those are for
re-charging only or if they tell the Newton the difference in Battery
type as well, but they might.

Don't go to the extreme as yet - try Alkaline batteries first and if
they don't work, you might try to open up the little marvel. I myself
have newer opened up my machine, although I opened up one once - and
never got it to close properly again. If you're looking for Newton
re-chargeable batteries try
http://powerwarehouse.com/list_item.asp?mfg=APPLE&model=Newton2000MessagePad&
x=15&y=5
They seem to have stock and charge about $51 for it.
I have bought 2 batteries from them before, one is working happily in my
wife's MP2100, the other is still unopened in the cupboard. Other than
that, I hav no association with them.
