The Apple Xserver has nothing which makes me want to get one. The drives
are ATA, where I would only use UltraSCSI-160. RAID is advertised as
'software', I would only use hardware RAID. It lets me connect to and
from anywhere, well, so does my Linux box. The major advantage of the
Motorola PPC processors, the AltiVec unit(s) is not supported by the OS
or the applications, the C compiler they use (GCC) doesn't optimize for
AltiVec code.
MacOS X Server is not up to scratch as far as speed is concerned. The
hardware might be cool, but the OS is definitely not. The lack of
documentation doesn't ease the situation either.
And then there is the lack of commercial server applications. The
database system I can get are all open source (MySQL, PostgreSQL to name
two), but what about Oracle, DB2 or Progress (never heard about that
one, huh?). Great, Photoshop, Office and Instant Messagers - but hey,
those are client applications, they have no business on a server.
If Apple wants to attract high end users for their hardware, they better
start getting some server applications to run on them. Apache alone
doesn't get anybody to buy into their boxes, no matter how good they
look.
Regards,
Chris
