Are the two aspects conveniently combined into one for us travellers?
Is the converter plug of which you spoke both a crossover and a
converter (between US RJ-11 and whatever is in use in the UK)?

I should know this, but during my last few trips to London I took my
PowerBook (for writing journals and as a backing store for my digital
camera) and rather than brave the confusing weirdness of the whole UK
'net mess I just walked around the corner to some 24-hour office
chain, plugged into their Ethernet, and blasted away (by which I mean
"downloaded email and uploaded my travelogue web pages").
