whoops - I haven't made myself clear again: what I meant to convey is
that a US modem cable is the same as a UK one except for the
connector on _one_ end. So a US modem cable with a little adaptor
will work fine. The problem only arises if you try to use the cable
that you find plugged into the telephone. This cable is wired
differently. It is tantalising because telephones connect using RJ11,
but the socket in the phone is crossed over compared to a modem, so
you end up having to take a modem cable around on your travels rather
than just unplugging any old phone's cable and using that. If you can
find somewhere with a fax machine then you can use that cable, but by
and large in the UK you need to take a modem a.k.a. 'crossover' cable
with you.
