I've never read of heard that this could be done, the PPP thing. I'm not
saying it can't be done, but I don't remember anybody being able to do that.

You don't do a shutdown with a Newton. You just turn it off and that's it.
It will perform a soft reset when you power it again, but you shouldn't lose
any data.
