Okay, so after Ken's tip to enable action sounds in the sounds pref, the
bookreader software, which never worked 100%, is now working.
The problem:
I purchased Bookreader, because I like to be able to do yard-work, dishes,
etc. while listening to talking books (ie, Macintalk reading Newtonbooks,
and paperback books....). I wanted to be able to have pausing and
bookmarking features, and this software offered a lot. However, I could
never get it to work properly. It would read a sentence or two, then
randomnly (or not so ramdomnly) skip sentences.
My theory is that more than one sound channel was being used to produce the
spoken text. So, some sentences (which I'm also guessing is the chunk being
sent to a channel) would play fine, and others (which played back on the
same channel as the action sounds) would not.
Other evidence to support Macintalk playback problems:
If you install Standalone's "Talktome" pkg, it won't play with action sound
disabled either. Enable action sounds and it plays!
Oddly, speaktext routing has always worked for me, but I was also unable to
get PlaySound to work with GestureLaunch/Dashboard. This now works. Oh me oh
my, life is good.
It's been quite a few months tracking this one down, so maybe it's worth a
mention in the sound section of the FAQ.
I'd be curious to hear from someone with a better technical understanding of
the actual mechanics of this problem.
