I'd put my vote behind this one.
Newt's (or more generally, Salamanders) have a fire connection as well. They
were thought to be fire resistant - and have a mythical significance (with
quotes to this effect in Shakespeare and others). From dictionary.com:
"...a mythical creature, generally resembling a lizard, believed capable of
living in or withstanding fire."
Newts do seem to be fire resistant, if not crush-proof...
