Yes, you need the dongle for any serial connection to your MP2x00, except
you go for the famous SER-001 from Mr. PCBman which eliminates the need for
a dongle.

The 3C589D will work perfectly with your MP2x00 - the TP says that it comes
with a twisted pair (RJ45) cable or adaptor.
If you intend to connect your Newt to a UTP or STP network then the TP
option is the right choice.
