I don't think any discussion of the viablity of the platform would be
complete without a serious nod to the community which refuses to let it
die. I wasn't in a position to purchase a Newton when they were new and
once I could afford one, I assumed I'd missed my chance as they had been
officially killed and buried.

It just so happened that on the very day I decided it was time to start
researching a replacement for my existing PDA, I ran across a Slashdot
article commemorating the 5th anniversary of the cancellation of the Newton.
Reading that article led me to the community, which through the
informational resources they maintain convinced me that not only was the
newton everything I had ever wanted in a PDA, it was also perfectly
reasonable to purchase one for everyday use because of the incredible
wealth of support knowledge available.

the newton community has successfully guided me through the process of
becoming an educated newton consumer, helped me understand common problems
and their solutions (both hardware and software) and enabled me to make an
abandoned platform a productive part of my everyday life. A perfect
example: I just recently set up ethernet access for my newton successfully
in less than 10 minutes, on the first try.

In just a couple of months, I've managed to replace not only my anemic
excuse for a PDA, but my laptop as well. Thank you everyone!
