Re: [NTLK] [NTLK]Case Cracking from SER-001?

Although it is unlikely that the SER-001 is causing the cracking, you
may want to check the archives for more information on ensuring that
your SER-001 is properly seated. I've read that you can stop a crack
from spreading by drilling a small hole at the terminus of the crack - I
would think that you could fill the hole from the inside of the case
with RTV silicone which would allow some flexibility and still seal out
any moisture/dirt/dust. I would avoid using any other compounds that
might expand and add additional pressure. YMMV...and the usual
disclaimers apply, as I have not tested this method. I'm sure others
will have some say in the matter as well. Good luck!

My u2000 has developed a several inch long jagged crack on the=20
underside of its case starting under the edge of the case at the=20
SER-001. The crack wasn't there when I installed the unit some months=20
back and I've just noticed it recently. I haven't dropped or=20
otherwise stressed the unit as far as I know but I do carry it in an=20
unpadded case every day on the bus etc.

Has anyone else had this problem? More importantly, are there any=20
good tips to keep the crack from spreading farther or otherwise=20
causing significant damage to the unit? I've done a full backup=20
(partially successful like usual) to my 32 meg card and applied=20
electrical tape to hold the crack together for now. I do have a=20
backup unit but would rather not retire my trusty newton just yet...

Any advice out there?

Dale
p.s. I am not a heavy user of the SER-001.
