Re: [NTLK] screen dump

This is something I've been trying to do for some time. So I sat down and
went through most of the options listed. Here are some of my observations
on the choices in the FAQ:

NTK: My screenshots were distorted and unusable. Everything was stretched
horizontally, though the screen ratio was correct, lost about 3/4 off the
right side. Puzzling. Bit fiddly, and slow through serial. Any ideas on
why it would distort, in both landscape and portrait? Good choice if you
only have serial and want cheap, and can get it to work.

X-Port: Didn't work with gray-scale, came out black and white. Lots of
black. The buttons shown were those of a 130 !?! Also expensive. And is it
still available?

EETransfer: Needed a zModem tool, so downloaded their recommended one, but
couldn't make a connection to export. The preview looked good though.
Expensive, in the $50 range IIRC, add another shareware fee for zModem.
Fiddly as well.

RCU: Can't do a screen shot in demo mode so couldn't fully test it. $25
for the downloadable version so a little cheaper. Serial only. Needs
client on PC side.

NewtVNC: Boy this would be cool for all the other things it does, but
looks like a lot of setting up to do just to get screen grabs. Needs
application installed on client PC. I wimped out.

Screenshooter: Requires Simplemail to email images. For whatever reason
(arrgh) I couldn't get Simplemail to send though I've used it in the past.
Looks like it worked, but didn't. Useful if you need just an image or two,
or want to send images to someone else, but fiddly if you're doing a lot
for yourself. Killer sound effect.

NPDS: The winner! Install the server, setup, and gif-server (notes server
as well while you're at it) and bada-bing-bada-boom I had screen shots in
a jiffy. And a way cool web-server too! Ethernet connection is fast, any
browser displays the image. And the choice of gray-scale or green-scale?
Hilarious. <http://npds.free.fr/>
Tip: Once you've got it installed go to http://newt.ip.address.here/screen/
anyname.gif
You may also want to disable the cache.

As always, YMMV. I'm sure others have gotten the others to work (or it
wouldn't be in the FAQ) but I didn't have time to figure it all out (didn'
t really have time to do this test in the first place).

It should be noted that all of these options/combos will provide other
functionality which you may find useful. My comments are just for screen
capturing.
