It wouldn't slide again just because you loosened the screws. What might have
happened is that the metal part of the slider (on the mainboard) was not in, but
next to the plastic part (in the case). It might have happened that the slider is now
in the "least contrast" position?

No. The eMate will run fine off the ac adapter alone. Have you tried all resets that
I describe on my eMate disassembly page

Make sure to put the volume slider to the loudes position, otherwise you might miss
the startup sound.

PS You ARE sure the display ribbon cable connector on the main logic board is
locked?
