That is an easy one. Because the touchscreen has nothing to
do hardware-wise with what is shown on the display. You
could rip the touchscreen foil off and would still get what you
are seeing.

If they replace the display unit, you would probably not lose any
data unless they do a hard reset. You might want to try to get hold
of a memory card on which DataRescue is installed.

DataRescue automatically opens a connection when the card is
inserted or the Newton is reset, maybe it will do this and you
can do a backup using the Newton Connection Utilities.
But if you dare opening the Newton, do try re-seating the ROM
board.
