You should somehow define TCP/IP addresses. You'll need different addresses
for each device connected to the network, which you can define manually
(static address) or let a DHCP server do that work. This DHCP server has to
be set-up in e.g. your ADSL router or in a server and maybe even in your OSX
machine. I did successfully connect my Newton to a standalone machine w/o
any DHCP server by ethernet but with a crossed cable. Both machines where
set to DHCP but I don't know why it worked. Obviously are only 2 computers
able to talk with each other w/o DHCP server. Or maybe it worked because of
the underlying AppleTalk protocol.
